To start this quest, you need to talk to a certain Young Woman who's despairing after her fiancé went missing. This will be possible when you liberate a nearby site.
While wandering Velen Geralt happened across a woman who was weeping violently. She explained that her betrothed had gone into the woods to check his traps but never returned - and she feared the worst. Geralt calmed her and promised to check what had become of her beloved.

Go to the nearby forest. There you will find a pack of wild dogs (10), a few snares and a man's corpse lying on the ground. When you examine the corpse, you will realize that this is a missing fiancé who has been killed by the dogs.
Go back to the woman and tell her the bad news. The woman will want to pay you, you can accept the money (50 crowns, 20 XP) or refuse (60 XP).
Note: If you go too far away before you tell the woman what happened to her fiancé, the quest will end in failure, so it's best to go straight to her.
When Geralt returned from the woods, he did not bring good news with him. The woman saw this in his face at once. Though her hands trembled and her eyes welled with bitter tears, she did not forget to pay the witcher what he was owed and thank him with some kind words.
