Quest Group: Wincestre / The City of Faith
You will get this quest when you use the alliance map and select Wincestre. It will be possible after you have completed all quests in Jorvik and then talked about what happened there with Hytham.
Meet with the mysterious contact and find out what they want.
Head to the Old Minster in Wincestre.
Enter the church and talk to the priest you will meet there. Eivor will say the password and then the monk will want to make sure you are the right person. You will be given the following options:
To know the answers you must find the three parables. You will find one in the same room as the priest, and the other two in adjacent rooms.
Then return to the priest and speak the deeds of Christ in order:
The priest will lead you to an upstairs room where the person who ordered you to be summoned to Wincestre is waiting for you.
It will turn out that the person who wants to talk to you is King Aelfred himself. He will show you a letter about a plot to kill him which is being carried out by three members of the Order.
The king will offer you a handsome reward for getting rid of these people and suggest where you should start your search.
Go to the reeve's house and get rid of the three soldiers you encounter there.
You need to examine two clues. The first is a half-burned letter you find in the fireplace.
A half-burned letter.
You have been a thorn in my side long enough, Goodwin. Cease your snooping, or I will use my considerable influence to lock you in the garrison. Not even your feeble king will save you then.
The Gallows
The second clue is the damaged home equipment you will find on the upper floor.
Head to the Wincestre Garrison, the heavily guarded military camp in the southwest corner of the city. Goodwin is being kept in the large tower within the inner walls. To get into the inner area you will need a key. The Key to the locked door is located on the ground floor of the building just west of the locked gate to the inner courtyard.
Once inside the inner courtyard, head to the basement of the tower. There are three cells in the basement, Goodwin is in one of them. Destroy the lock, head inside and release him. Goodwin will tell you to find his notes and he will leave the fort.
The documents are located in a locked room midway up the tower. Climb the stairs until you find the door that is barred. Look through the small window next to it and shoot the lock on another door.
Go up the stairs to the upper level and step out onto the balcony. Drop to the platform below platform and head through the now unlocked door.
Inside you will find the documents on the table.
Goodwin's Research
I have arranged to meet Harold at the tavern under the cover of darkness. He was terrified when I approached him in the open. Eyes darting left and right, as if he thought the very walls were watching us.
Harold did not come. I waited for more than an hour. And when I went to his home near the Minster, the place was torn apart, his belongings gone.
Four others came forward with information on the Gallows' identity. And all four have met a horrible end. Two were hanged in the square on petty charges. One was found dead, allegedly after a drunken brawl. Another has fled.
The two who were hanged. The Gallows must be another reeve, I am sure of it. Only we have the power to judge the people of Wincestre.
He (the Gallows) is a public figure. He outwardly opposes Aelfred's reforms. I do not dare write my suspicions here.
(The research continues for many more pages).
Leave the fort, find and speak with Goodwin. You will go over his research to find out more about the members of the Order in Wincestre. After conversation, this quest will be completed.
After completing this quest, you will be able to play the quest Choking the Gallows.
