Quest Group: Lincolnscire / The Lay of Hunwald
Prerequisites: To play this quest, you must first complete the quest Where the Stone Falls.
This quest can be obtained in two ways. If you selected Aelfgar or Hunwald in the quest "Where the Stone Falls" when voting for the new ealdorman of Lincolnscire, then you will receive it right after completing the above quest.
Bishop Herefrith has fled to Anecastre and holed up in a fortress with his most loyal guards. Eivor sets out to confront him with the help of some friends.
If you have decided that Herefrith should be the new ealdorman then you will learn that the bishop is a member of the Order later in the game. At some point, in my case it was after completing the quests in Jorvik (perhaps this will be after you have completed the next pledge), Randvi will inform you about the letter from Aelfgar, in which he writes that the bishop has turned on his people. Aelfgar will be waiting for you near the lake.
A letter from Aelfgar arrived at the settlement, stating that Herefrith has fortified himself in Anecastre after turning on the people of Lincoln.
You will find the new ealdorman (Hunwald or Aelfgar) near the bridge over the river south of the city. It will tell you where Herefrith has escaped.
Together with others, go to the camp located near Wynmere Lake.
When you are ready to attack the fortress, then talk to the captain and tell him about it. The assault on Anecastre will begin.
The assault on the castle does not differ much from other assaults you have taken part in in the past. The first stage will be to smash the main gate with a battering ram. You can help operate the battering ram, you can also climb ladders onto the walls and eliminate enemy soldiers or destroy the cauldron with hot oil.
You can destroy the wooden blockade by blowing it up with a jug of oil.
You can also use a ballista for this purpose.
Run up to the drawbridge and shoot the links on the left and right side of it to lower it. The best way is to run along the right side, climb the wall and jump across it to the moat. From there you will be able to shoot down both links without being disturbed by enemy soldiers.
Herefrith is hiding inside the main chapel. All the doors of the temple are barred from the inside so you have to use one of the alternative entrances. You can climb up the scaffolding, smash one of the stained glass windows and go inside this way.
You can also use the underground tunnel. You will find the entrance to it in a nearby small building.
Besides the bishop, there will also be a few soldiers inside the chapel. Kill the bishop and confirm the kill.
To complete this quest talk to the new ealdorman of Lincolnscire one more time.
If Hunwald has been chosen as the new ealdorman, he will ask you if his beloved can take refuge in your settlement, at least until the situation in Lincolnscire calms down a bit. If Aelfgar has been chosen as the new ealdorman, then Hunwald will ask you, if he and his beloved can come live in your settlement. In both cases you will agree to fulfill his request.
After completing this quest, you will be able to play the quest Reporting on Lincolnscire.
