Contract: Swamp Thing Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Quest

Suggested level: 12

Group: Witcher Contracts

Location: Velen

You can start this quest by reading the "Monster from the Swamp" contract posted on the Downwarren Notice Board, talking to Leslav or finding the mysterious fog.

A mysterious fog that killed all who ventured into it had arisen near the village of Downwarren - inconveniently close to where peat was being dug. Geralt decided to investigate this murderous mist and see if he couldn't put a stop to it.

or (if you talked to Leslaw first)

Near the village called Downwarren, Geralt came across a man who dug peat for a living. One glance was enough to know something was ailing the poor fellow. He warned the witcher about a strangling fog which had sprung up in the nearby swamp. The man's story convinced Geralt a monster was at work and so he decided to look into the matter.

Quest stages of Contract: Swamp Thing

1. Talk to the contract issuer.

Head to the marshes and talk to Leslav.

Talk to the contract issuer.

2. Find out what's killing people in the fog. / Use the Eye of Nehaleni to see through the illusion.

Go to the search area. There you'll find a body, you should examine it, and some "stone like" objects. Once you use the Eye of Nehaleni you got from Keira (the "Wandering in the Dark" quest), you will discover the traces hidden under the illusion.

Find out what's killing people in the fog. / Use the Eye of Nehaleni to see through the illusion.

Follow the traces to a small hut located to the west. You'll find two more clues there - the body of a recent victim and the completely rotten corpse of another. After examining them, Geralt will conclude that he's dealing with an old foglet.

Geralt's investigation took him to the very heart of the swamp. As he was walking an exceptionally hideous foglet suddenly jumped out at him from an unusually thick patch of fog. The monster was old and strong, making defeating of it no easy labor. Geralt managed the task, however, and a few moments after the foglet breathed its last, the poisonous fog dispersed and the witcher could at last fill his lungs safely.

3. Navigate the illusions to find the foglet.

The scent trail can lead you to one of the entrances to a nearby cave. Watch out for the toxic gas. Two of the entrances are masked with an illusion and you must use the Eye of Nehaleni to expose them. The third entrance is regular entrance.

Navigate the illusions to find the foglet.

Depending on which entrance you choose to enter, you may first come across an ordinary foglet (4). When you reach the main cave and enter the fog, you will encounter Ignis Fatuus there.

4. Kill the foglet. / Take a trophy from the foglet's body.

Its hits do a lot of damage, so it's best to use the Quen sign during this fight. Boss will often disappear and summon minor foglets who are relatively weak. The monsters cannot leave the fog, so you can run out to regenerate if you need to. Moon dust bombs and necrophage oil will be useful in this fight.

After the fight, take the Foglet trophy (5% Bonus gold) from its corpse. In its corpse you will also find a relic steel sword - Carabella.

Kill the foglet. / Take a trophy from the foglet's body.

5. Collect the reward for the foglet.

Go back to Leslav. If you didn't haggle with him, he'll give you 136 crowns and the quest will be over. If you haggled with him, Geralt will notice that Leslav gave him a little less money than you agreed.

You can demand immediate payment, and then Leslav will give you everything he's got, but it'll be less than you agreed to.

Hoping to find someone who would offer him a reward, Geralt went to Downwarren. A peat digger residing in that village was grateful Geralt had enabled a return to his labors and so handed the witcher some coin.

Or you can agree to Leslav's offer. If you agree to wait, he'll promise to pay you double.

5.1. (Optional) Return in a week to collect the agreed-on reward plus interest. / Collect the agreed-on reward from the contract issuer.

Wait seven days (the fastest way is to meditate) and return to Leslav. This time he'll have enough money to pay you twice what you've negotiated with him.

Hoping to find someone who would offer him a reward, Geralt went to Downwarren. A peat digger residing there was grateful to the witcher for enabling him to return to his labors and promised the witcher a generous reward - if he could stand to wait a few days while he gathered more funds. Geralt agreed, and in return for his patience received a purse full of gold crowns.
