In these places there are some kind of openings in the wall, ladders, etc. located somewhere high up. In order to use them, there must be a companion with you. Then you will be able to lift the other person up and then she/he will climb higher and, for example, lower the ladder for you to use, or go through the opening to the other side and open a door or gate for you, which can only be unlocked from that side.

Collapsible Ladder
Ashley has to be with you, so this will be possible in Chapter 5. First, pull the handle hidden behind the painting to reveal the attic ladder. Then you should lift Ashley up, and she will extend the ladder for you.
2Collapsible Ladder
Ashley has to be with you. You should lift Ashley up here. She will climb up and extend the ladder for you.
3Gap in the Wall
Here you can lift Ashley up. This will be possible in the 5th chapter of the game. Then she will enter the building through the gap and open the door for you.
Locations on The Castle
4Gap in the Wall
Give Ashley a lift here, and then she will open the Locked Gate (Audience Chamber) for you.
5Gap in the Wall
Ashley can go through the opening to the other side and open the gate for you.
6Ledge
You can give Ashley a lift here so that she can get to the next two hidden platform wheels - Hidden Platform Halo Wheel Pedestal (2/3) and Hidden Platform Halo Wheel Pedestal (3/3).
7Locked Gate
You can open this gate at some stage in Chapter 9, when Ashely rejoins you.
