Prerequisites: To play this mission, you must first complete the mission Goodbye, Dear Friend.
You will be able to start this mission some time after completing the Goodbye, Dear Friend mission. To do this, go to the place northeast of Valentine where Dutch and Eagle Flies are preparing to ambush a military patrol. Their plan is to use the dynamite to trap the soldiers heading through the canyon, and then humiliate them by tarring and feathering them.
Dutch has convinced Eagle Flies to take action against the military.
Dutch will take the dynamite out of the wagon and head to the valley. Follow him. On the way Dutch will reveal his true intentions to you. He plans to divert the government attention from your gang onto the Natives.
When you get down into the canyon, pick up the spool ...
... unroll the wire towards the trees on which Dutch is placing the explosives ...
.... and attach the wire to the dynamite. In total, you'll place charges on four trees.
When you have placed all explosives, return with Dutch to the top of the cliff and get into position next to the detonator.
Wait for a group of soldiers to enter between the trees on which the dynamite is planted and then detonate the charges.
Eagle Flies and Dutch will start talking to the trapped soldiers.
The conversation will not last long, as another group of soldiers will soon appear on the road and the shooting will begin.
Start shooting at the soldiers in the canyon. Collect the first headshots because you need to get 35 of them in the whole mission.
After a while, a few soldiers will run up the path to the hill and attack you from the left side. It is best to run towards them a bit so that your companions do not kill them faster than you.
When you kill all the soldiers, Dutch will order you to run down to the canyon, and loot the bodies.
Run down to the canyon and search some bodies lying in the yellow area. You will not find anything significant.
After a while, there will be an explosion near you. You will be attacked by another squad of soldiers, this time equipped with a cannon.
The cannon's position is on a nearby hill. You have 45 seconds, if you want to earn the gold medal, to kill the cannoneer. Quickly kill a few soldiers surrounding the cannon, approach it from the side and shoot the cannonier. Then kill the remaining soldiers.
After a moment of break and a short conversation between Dutch and Arthur, you will be under artillery fire again and another regiment of soldiers will be approaching your position. So you will have to run away.
Run to your horses, mount your horse, and follow Dutch.
When you reach the narrow path leading down, you will get off your horses and continue on foot.
Not much further you will be under fire from a few soldiers standing on the hill on the right side.
When you kill them you will run along the path leading slightly uphill to the left. Near a large fallen tree trunk you will be attacked by another group of soldiers.
Then you will follow the path downhill.
When you run down a bit, new soldiers will start coming after you. More and more soldiers are going to arrive all the time so this is a good opportunity to get missing headshots needed to earn a gold medal.
When you are ready for further escape, run down the path to its end. This is a dead end and after a while you will be surrounded by soldiers. Lift up your hands and surrender and then slowly move back to the edge of the cliff together with Dutch.
When possible, jump down to a river flowing below.
Swim down the river.
When Dutch comes out on the shore, approach him, he will pull you out of the water and the mission will end.
After completing this mission, you will be able to play the mission The King's Son.
