Prerequisites: To play this mission, you must first complete the mission Outlaws From the West.
You will receive this mission automatically at the end of the Outlaws From the West mission. Abigail will ask Arthur and Javier to check what happened to John, who did not return from a scouting mission.
John hasn’t returned from an earlier scouting trip. Arthur and Javier ride out into the snow to look for him.

Javier will find John's trail at the abandoned camp site, and you will start searching for him from there.
You will ride through treacherous terrain following John's trail until you eventually find his dead horse. Javier will fire his gun to see if John's close and he can hear you. In the distance you will hear John calling for help.
A little further you'll get off your horses. Before you move forward, grab a shotgun from your horse's saddle.
Note: If you want, you can change the shotgun back to the revolver right after that.
Keep up with Javier, this time on foot. You will have some climbing to do along the way and a short break to recover.
Eventually you will reach John, he's badly injured and needs help.
Arthur will pick up John and you'll be on your way back.
At some point you will be attacked by a pack of three wolves.
Javier will take John and go with him towards your horses that are standing nearby, and your job will be to kill wolves before they kill one of you.
If you want to get the gold medal in this mission, you cannot let any of the wolves bite you. To minimize the chance that the wolves will get you, run forward and climb the rocks on the right side. Then the wolves will have difficult access to you, which will give you a little more time to reload your weapons, etc.
When you kill all three wolves, get on your horse and continue your way back to the camp.
After some time, you will be attacked by another pack of wolves. Two wolves will come down from the top of the hill, and a third wolf will join them a little further. Kill all the wolves before they get to Javier and John.
The last part of the journey will run smoothly. Follow Javier down the river and you will soon return to the camp.
After completing this mission, you will be able to play the missions Old Friends, The Aftermath of Genesis.
