Quest stages of A Message in Fire
1. Travel to southern Umugi prefecture / Search for Umugi Cove
Go to Umugi Cove. The easiest way to get to town is from the north side. You can also get there using the path that leads to the town from the east side.
2. Search Umugi Cove for the pirate Goro / Follow the guard to meet Lady Sanjo / Speak with Lady Sanjo
Soon after you enter the town, you will be stopped by a guard who will ask you the reason of your visit. When he figures out who you are, he'll take you to Lady Sanjo, who runs this place.
Follow the guard. He will take you to Lady Sanjo and you will be able to ask her about a smuggler named Goro you are looking for. She will tell you that you can find him on the lower floor.
3. Speak with Goro
Go downstairs and talk to Goro. You'll explain to him what the purpose of your visit is and after a while you'll head to his house together.
4. Walk with Goro / Take the map from Goro
When you reach his house, Goro will find and give you the map leading to his hidden smuggling boat in Yarikawa prefecture. He will be waiting for you there. When you take the map, two ronin, who have something to do with Goro will knock on the door of his house. Goro will hide on the upper floor of his house and you will decide to deal with the ronin.
5. Confront the ronin
Open the door and talk to the ronin. When they see they're dealing with a samurai, they'll leave in peace.
We need samurai reinforcements if we're going to save our home. The Shogun can provide them, but only if we contact him to request more forces.
I found my uncle's contact, a wine-soaked pirate skilled enough to break the Mongol blockade and deliver our request to the Shogun. Lord Shimura awaits word of my progress at our old hunting camp in Akashima.
6. Meet Lord Shimura at his old hunting camp / Speak with Lord Shimura at his camp
Go to the camp on the east coast where Lord Shimura awaits you. After a short conversation you, your uncle, and the two messengers Kotaro and Jiro will head north to meet Goro.
We are ready to request samurai reinforcements from the Shogun. All that stands in our way is the Mongol fleet blockading our island. If our messengers hope to reach the Shogun, Lord Shimura and I must cover their boat as it attempts to escape.
7. Travel with Lord Shimura to meet Goro / Follow Goro to his boat
Ride with others. After some time you will meet Goro. He will take you to the coast where his ship is hidden and from where you can see Fort Mitodake. Lord Shimura will introduce you to his plan. He and you will attack the fort to attract the attention of the Mongolian ship's crews, so that Goro and the messengers can sail away unnoticed.
8. Travel with Lord Shimura to Fort Mitodake / Ambush the Mongol patrol with Lord Shimura / Attack Fort Mitodake with Lord Shimura
Follow Lord Shimura to the hill near the road leading to the fort. You will see the patrol that just left the fort. Lord Shimura will not listen to your suggestion to let them pass and will attack them when they come closer. It's best to stay on the hill for a while and use the bow to get rid of the archers and then, using the height difference, assassinate as many as you can.
When you get rid of the patrol, you will move towards the fort's gate, killing more opponents along the way.
9. Open the gates with Lord Shimura / Attack Fort Mitodake with Lord Shimura / Fight to the hwacha tower with Lord Shimura
When you get rid of your opponents outside the fort, approach the gate and help Lord Shimura open it. When you get inside, be prepared for the archers to shoot fire arrows at you. It is best to quickly take cover behind the nearby barrels and when the archers are reloading, run to the second gate where Lord Shimura is waiting for you.
Keep moving forward, eliminating more opponents, and when you get to a certain place you will be under fire from a Mongolian cannon called "hwacha" which is located on the tower at the top of the hill. You must get there asap.
Head towards the hill, killing the Mongols who will stand in your way. You must be especially careful about the white circles that appear on the ground. That area is about to be shot by a hwacha so you can't stand there. When you climb the tower, you will see that Goro's ship has been spotted and you will have to help him by firing on enemy boats and ships from the cannon you have just captured.
10. Defend Goro's ship
First you have to destroy the small boats that are heading towards the Goro's ship. You can't let them get close to it.
Then you must kill the archers that are firing on Goro's ship from the shore. Your next target should be the big ships and a few more small boats that sail towards Goro's ship from different sides.
When Goro manages to sail out to the open sea, you will talk for a while with your uncle about your relationship with him and few seconds later this tale will end.
After completing A Message in Fire you will get or will be able to get A Reckoning in Blood (1 of 3).
