In Ghost of Tsushima, Animal Sanctuaries are a specific type of side activity introduced in the Iki Island expansion. They serve as a way to earn powerful combat charms. When you find a sanctuary, you must calm the animals - Cats, Deer, or Monkeys - by playing a flute mini-game. In some cases, you will need to release them if they are inside a cage, or defeat enemies that are guarding the area. Once calmed, the animals become friendly, allowing you to pet them whenever you return to that location.
There are 9 Animal Sanctuaries in total, 3 for each animal type. Completing the first one of each type grants a unique Major Charm, and completing subsequent ones of that same type upgrades the charm's effectiveness.
