Quest stages of The Abbot's Gambit
1. Find and speak to Basim
Go to the Saint Hadrian's Priory. There you will find Basim talking to one of the monks.
He will tell you that the person you need to talk to about Fulke is Abbot Cynebert.
2. Follow Basim
Go with Basim and he will introduce you to the Abbot Cynebert. He will agree to help you locate Fulke but of course he will want something in exchange. He wants you to intercept a messenger who has information on who will be the next ealdorman.
4. Ask about the emissary
You need to talk to two men to get the information you need. You will get the information no matter which dialog options you choose. You will find the first guy at the back of the tavern.
The other one has barricaded himself in one of the rooms in a nearby house. To get inside you have to destroy the door lock by shooting it through the window.
5. Find and speak to the bard
Go to the river and find a bard lying under the bridge on the other side of the river. He is completely drunk.
6. Sober up the bard
Pick him up, carry him to the river and get in the water with him. This should be enough to sober him up.
7. Speak to the bard
When the bard sober up, talk to him. He will want something in return for the information but you don't have to pay him, you can choose any dialogue option and he will tell you where the emissary went.
8. Find and get the message
You will now have a relatively long journey to the east coast, to Dover Fortress. The fortress is well guarded. If you feel strong enough, you can of course attack openly the soldiers in the fortress, but the game itself suggests to choose a more subtle solution. The emissary does not stay in one place, he moves around the fortress area, but stays for a relatively long time near the square where the soldiers practise in the central, lower part of the fortress. You can easily sneak up to him there using the lush vegetation on the south side and simply steal from him.
You can also wait for the emissary to move near the southern walls of the fortress and steal or simply kill him there. In this case, you should first eliminate the two soldiers present nearby and hide their bodies so that they do not interfere.
Anyway, once you get the king's orders, this quest will end and you will get another one - Puppets and Prisoners.
After completing The Abbot's Gambit you will get or will be able to get Puppets and Prisoners.
