Possession Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Quest

Suggested level: 17

Group: Secondary Quests

Location: Skellige

This quest will appear in your journal when at the end of "The King is Dead - Long Live the King" quest Crach an Craite will ask you for help with his children - Cerys and Hjalmar.

Concern filled Crach's voice. And something else… pride? The jarl had pulled Geralt aside during King Bran's wake to confess his worries about his daughter, Cerys. She had sailed to Spikeroog, seeking to cure Jarl Udalryk's mysterious affliction. A dangerous mission, though one that would certainly be less so with a witcher's help. Geralt eyed his old friend over carefully, then made his decision.

Go to designated location and dive. A few sirens (13) will probably swim nearby, kill them. Find the bones lying at the bottom and examine them to put the sword by the remains of Aki.

Place Brokvar near Aki's bones.

7. Return to Udalryk.

When you return to Udalryk, you'll find that the curse is not gone. Jarl had another vision where the voices told him to poke out his eye out. Geralt will ask him some questions and he'll finally realize what the real problem is.

After analyzing all the evidence, Geralt came to the conclusion that Udalryk was not haunted by a ghost, as Cerys had thought, nor was he insane or touched by the gods, as many Skelligers believed. The situation was far more grave: a particularly malicious wraith, known as a hym, had latched onto the jarl. Geralt and Cerys thus faced the challenge of finding a way to free Udalryk from this evil being's power.

Return to Udalryk.

Geralt will introduce Cerys to two possible ways to get rid of the hym tormenting the jarl. You can try to kill him or cheat him. Cerys will be in favor of trying to trick him. Both solutions will require a visit to the old family house.

8. Meet Cerys in Udalryk's old home. / Search the house and find a way to drive off the hym.

All you have to do is examine the stove in the main room...

Meet Cerys in Udalryk's old home. / Search the house and find a way to drive off the hym.

...and the old cradle you find in one of the small rooms. Then Cerys should shout that she has found something and you should come to her. You can also examine the broken mirror in the other small room but this is not necessary.

9. See what Cerys has found.

Talk to Cerys. She'll tell you she has a plan how to trick Hym but she doesn't want to reveal the details. You can trust her and agree to follow her plan or refuse.

See what Cerys has found.

10. The Cerys' plan. Trying to trick Hym.

If you've decided to trust Cerys and carry out her plan to get rid of Hym.

10.1. When you're ready, talk to Cerys.

When you're ready, tell Cerys about it. She'll ask you to light the oven and she'll go arrange something.

Some time later, Cerys will run into the house carrying Udalryk's baby in her arms. She'll hand the baby over to you and tell you to put it in the stove. Udalryk and some of his people will run into the house aftter her and order you to give the child back.

When you're ready, talk to Cerys.

You will have a limited amount of time to decide whether to hand over the baby or put it in the oven. For the Cerys plan to work, you have to put the baby in the oven. If you hand the child over to Udalryk, Cerys will explain to you what her plan was, then you will talk to Udalryk and move on to the realisation of the witcher's way of getting rid of Hym. Hjort will tell you where to find the torches you need to lure Hym.

10.2. Defeat Udalryk's warriors.

If you put the baby in the stove, Udalryk will try to open the stove and pull the baby out of there and you will be attacked by his warriors. When you defeat them, Hym, seeing how a terrible crime you've committed, will move from Udalryk to you.

Defeat Udalryk's warriors.

Then Cerys and Hjort will come from the room behind the stove and hand over the whole and healthy child to Udalryk. They pulled the child out of the stove through the back door and thus cheated Hym. It will have no choice but to go away.

Defeat Udalryk's warriors.

You'll all leave the house, explain to Udalryk what happened, then you will part and the quest will be over.

Cerys hit upon an idea. They would trick the hym. Geralt decided to trust her. Cerys ran off, snatched Udalryk's infant child from its cradle and ran back towards the abandoned home, with the jarl and his honor guard hot on her heels. Meanwhile Hjort, whom Cerys had informed of her plan and asked for help, slipped into the house unnoticed.

Once inside, Cerys commanded Geralt to toss the babe into a burning stove. Caught off-guard by this seemingly-mad request, Geralt nevertheless acquiesced, hoping it was all part of the plan. To his great relief, it was. The hym, thinking Geralt an infanticide, left Udalryk to latch onto this new, even more guilt-ridden victim. Yet when it was revealed the child had survived unharmed, the evil being had to depart into the ether. Cerys' trickery and the witcher's cold blood had saved Udalryk, freeing him from his torment at long last.

11. The witcher's way to get rid of hym.

If you have refused to carry out Cerys' plan or have not decided to put the child in the stove during its execution.

11.1. Tell Udalryk about the hym.

Go back to Udalryk and tell him about Hym and the plan to kill him. At first he will resist but eventually he will agree to do so. Hjort will bring you the torches you will need to execute the plan.

Tell Udalryk about the hym.

11.1.1. (Optional) Bring torches from the storage shed.

If you agreed to the Cerys plan but returned the child to Udalryk during its execution, then you will have to get torches on your own. You'll find torches in a small shed near the abandoned house. Use your weapon or an aard sign to smash down the door.

(Optional) Bring torches from the storage shed.

11.2. Place torches around the abandoned home. 0/4 / When you're ready, talk to Udalryk.

Return to the abandoned house and place the torches in the four holders in the main room.

Place torches around the abandoned home. 0/4 / When you're ready, talk to Udalryk.

When it's done and you're ready, talk to Udalryk who's waiting outside the house. You'll give him some information and you'll both enter the house.

11.3. Light the torches. / Kill the hym. / Calm Udalryk. / Go to the basement.

Light the torches you placed in the room. When you do that, Hym will appear and the fight will begin.

Light the torches. / Kill the hym. / Calm Udalryk. / Go to the basement.

At some point in the fight, when Udalryk starts to panic and run away, use Axii sign on him to calm him down and get him back to his place. When you weaken the monster hard enough, it will sink into the ground. You should then go down to the basement and finish the monster.

Light the torches. / Kill the hym. / Calm Udalryk. / Go to the basement.

11.4. Tell Udalryk it's all over.

Leave the basement. Geralt will inform Udalryk that the monster was killed. Together, you will leave the house and Cerys and Hjort will join you. You'll talk for a while. Udalryk will thank you and then the quest will be over.

Tell Udalryk it's all over.

Geralt decided to take care of the hym using tried and true witcher methods. This meant, as it often does, waiting until after dusk and gathering a generous supply of torches. Only then did he and Udalryk journey to the abandoned home to set about forcing the wraith to reveal its true visage. The fight lasted the entire night. Though at times Geralt feared Udalryk would not withstand the torture the hym dealt in its last throes of self-defense, by the time dawn came our heroes had triumphed and the hym had dissolved back into the ether.

After completing Possession you will get or will be able to get King's Gambit (1 of 2).
