To start this quest, talk to Gascoigne & Victor and have a drink with them: "Gladly" > "Last round for me...". When you wake up the next morning, the bards will disappear and with them some of your gear.
On the high road outside Novigrad Geralt came across a merry band of troubadours who invited him to join them around the campfire and partake of tasty beverages. The witcher naturally never turns down such propositions and so gladly took them up on it.
When he awoke the next morning, he discovered he had been robbed of all his possessions and the troubadours had vanished without a trace. Furious, he set off on the thieves' trail.

Quest stages of Novigrad Hospitality
1. Track down the bards using your Witcher Senses and recover your equipment.
Find the footprints of the bards and follow them.
The footprints will guide you to the nearby village of Yantra, where you will find both bards behind one of the houses. They'll give you back your things and you'll part. In addition, during the conversation, you can request them to give you their stuff - "We'll be good once you give me your things.", and then you will receive the bards' belongings that you can sell later.
Tracking down the bards posed no difficulty. Geralt quickly caught up with them and recovered his things. Had I been in his shoes, I'd undoubtedly have broken their lutes as well, for there is no place for such as they in the noble world of itinerant musicians.
