In order to start this mission, after completing The Landowning Classes mission go to the ranch you are going to buy. The mission will start when you talk to one of the sqatters.
Before he can purchase Beecher's Hope, John must inspect the land and move on any illegal tenants. Back in Blackwater he runs into an old friend.

Objectives of Home of the Gentry?
1. Confront the squatters / Deal with the squatters
You can kill them but you can also give them $10 then they will be very grateful to you and your honor will rise.
When you get rid of the wild tenants, John will automatically return to the bank and sign the loan documents.
When John leaves the bank, he'll meet another old friend, Uncle. Uncle will convince John to let him come to the ranch with him.
2. Mount your horse / Return to Beecher's Hope with Uncle
Mount your horse and ride straight to your ranch and you shouldn't have any trouble meeting the time limit for earning the gold medal.
When you arrive at the ranch and Uncle sees what a ruin you have bought, he will decide to stay at the ranch with you and support you in his way.
John will start his first work at the ranch, and this mission and the first part of the epilogue will end.
After completing Home of the Gentry? you will get or will be able to get Bare Knuckle Friendships (1 of 2).
