You can start this mission after you have finished building your new house on your ranch. To do this, talk to Uncle, who is resting under a tree.
Together you will come to the conclusion that John should breed sheep and for that he will need a barn.
With his debts mounting and a barn to buy, John accompanies Sadie to hunt down the wanted criminal, Ramón Cortez, and bring him to justice.

To begin A Quick Favor for an Old Friend you must first complete A New Jerusalem.
Objectives of A Quick Favor for an Old Friend
1. Mount your horse / Ride to the lumber yard in Blackwater / Speak to the lumber salesman
Get on your horse and ride with uncle to the lumberyard in Blackwater. The salesman will show you a catalogue of ready-made barns and John will choose one of them.
Then John will visit the bank to secure the funds necessary to finance the purchase, but the banker will not want to give him another loan.
When you get out of the bank, you'll meet Sadie Adler on the street. John will ask Sadie if he has a job for him because he desperately needs money. Sadie will say she has a job but it's a pretty dangerous job. John will say that he has no choice but to go with her.
2. Ride to Painted Sky / Investigate the barn / Capture Ramón Cortez alive
Go with Sadie to the Painter Sky farm. On the way, Sadie will tell you that the bounty she going after is Ramón Cortez, a wanted member of the Del Lobo gang.
When you get to the farm, Sadie's gonna go check the house and you're gonna have to check the barn.
Come up to the barn, break lock or kick its door and go inside.
When you enter the barn, you'll be ambushed by Cortez. Hit him few times and you'll be able to overpower him.
Sadie will come to the barn, make sure it's really Cortez, and make him quiet.
3. Follow Sadie to Rhodes / Deliver Ramón Cortez to the Sheriff
John will load Cortez on Sadies's horse and you'll head to the sheriff's office in Rhodes. As you travel, Cortez will try to bribe Sadie to free him and take him to Dewberry Creek, where the other members of his gang are staying. Of course, he will fail.
When you get to Rhodes, get off your horse, take Cortez and carry him to the cell in the sheriff's office.
Sheriff Thomas will ask Sadie and John to help him guard Cortez until his deputies arrive. It'll take time. When twilight comes, the Del Lobos Gang will come to Rhodes and they demand the sheriff to release Cortez. The shooting will begin.
4. Take out the attackers / Chase the attackers
If you want to earn a gold medal then you have to force Cortez's men to flee the city within 30 seconds. To do that, just kill those standing on the street quickly.
Another requirement to earn the gold medal in this mission is to kill four opponents with a hip shot. Now is a good time to do it. If you do not manage to score four such shots during this shooting, then you will have another chance to get missing shots at a later stage of this mission.
To shoot accurately from the hip, you should aim at the enemy, then release the aim button and then press fire button. Try to shoot one or two enemies in this way without leaving the building and then run outside and shoot at the others. When they start running away, run after them and kill them.
When you kill them all, you'll hear the sound of an explosion at the sheriff's office. The Del Lobos blew a hole in the jail and Cortez and the rest of his gang escaped. The sheriff wants you to get Cortez back, and only then he will pay you. Sadie will negotiate some extra funds for your trouble.
You and Sadie will leave to look for Cortez. Luckily you know where you can find him, because he told you this himself when you were transporting him to Rhodes.
5. Mount your horse / Follow Sadie to Dewberry Creek
Go with Sadie to Dewberry Creek. When you get there, you'll notice a gang camp set up near a railway bridge.
Keep going with Sadie until you reach the old mill from where you have a good view of the camp.
Sadie will go to the camp and your job will be to cover her with a sniper rifle.
6. Cover Sadie
Help Sadie eliminate the gang members in the camp. If you want to earn a gold medal then you must headshot 5 of them.
7. Meet up with Sadie / Chase Ramón Cortez
When you clear the camp, Sadie will call you to come to her. Get off the roof of the old mill and run to Sadie. Follow her down the dried stream bed, taking out enemies until you reach the lake. If you need to kill some more with a shot from the hip then now is an occasion to do so.
8. Clear the beach of gang members / Aim at Ramón Cortez boat and capture him alive
When you get to the beach, you'll see Cortez trying to escape by boat. Eliminate all the remaining members of his gang and equip your sniper rifle.
Aim at him with a sniper rifle but don't shoot.
In this way you will be able to convince him to turn back and surrender.
9. Take care of the backup
Before you can transport Cortez back to Rhodes, you will be attacked by another group of his gang members, which you will have to deal with.
10. Put Ramón Cortez on a horse / Ride to Rhodes / Deliver Ramón Cortez to the Sheriff
Once you've done this, nothing will stand in your way to return to Rhodes and hand Cortez over to the law enforcement.
After completing A Quick Favor for an Old Friend you will get or will be able to get Uncle's Bad Day.
