We sat down with Rosa Mel Paquete, a young drag performer becoming popular with students at Espinosa University. She is bold, brash, and buxom in blue sequins, deflecting our questions about who she is out of drag but very forthcoming about her art.
Reporter: You've been known to use puns that run close to public decency laws. Your name, for example. And in your recent show, titled 'Election and...the other 'E' word.
Rosa Mel: I know you can't print it so I won't say it! But yes, honey. It gets people to pay attention. It's the sugar with the medicine.
R: And what is the medicine?
Rosa Mel: Seeing through the bullshit, paying attention to the world. I love to sing to give Yarans an escape, but I won't sing them to sleep. Especially during an election.
R: Your show is highly critical of some of candidates, particularly Antón Castillo. Why him?
Rosa Mel: Yarans have seen what a Castillo in power looks like. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice...
