In order to open the secret room where the chest is, you must straighten all (5) the paintings in the mansion. In the note you can find in the mansion "Abbie's Note on Paintings" you will find some hints on how to do this. When all the paintings are straightened then you will hear the sound of moving something heavy in the bedroom. Go back to the bedroom and you will see the door to the secret room that was previously covered by the closet.

Old Mr. Bligh caught me straightening the paintings again and raised his voice to me. Those accursed paintings. Those accursed walls.The house itself and all within it turn in on me.
He's hiding something amidst these dark walls. I am sure of it. I must know what it is.
It has to do with those strange paintings. I straighten them, then find them crooked.
I've found that straightening the painting in the bedroom tilts all the other ones.
(No cry of light. No glimmer.)
I also found that the painting in the dining room does not tilt any other painting. (Do the walls keep shifting?)
In the darkness of the ballroom, its painting only tilts the one in the guest room.
My thoughts keep drifting as walls keep shifting. What would happen if I straightened the paintings in the guest room and the office?
Here then at long last is my darkness. No sound. No hope.
