All of the missing village youths were dead. Baba was merciless toward all who had crossed Yaga. Our heroine clung to remnants of hope for Zora’s safety.
But she could only cling for so long.
It was time to follow the trail of crumbs for one last time.
With a moderate pinch of enthusiasm, I eventually decided that Yaga became worthy of my counsel. We had a brief conversation during which I laid down some truths, some words of wisdom way overdue, yet timeless and invaluable.
It was high time for an experienced guide, not unlike myself, to lead the protege to her decisive moment. There were still some things left unsaid, and it would be the last chance to say them.
I would perhaps not go as far as to say I cared for Yaga’s wellbeing or any such mortal shenanigans, yet the role of a cathartic catalyst felt like an amusing pastime at that very moment.
Yaga managed to keep up with my relaxed pace, and soon enough, it was time I invited her to have another brief conversation. I was awaiting her by the gate.
All that was left to do before the journey’s grand finale was for Yaga to confront the tormented spirits of those she once knew.
This was it. The point of no return for Yaga’s journey. Beyond the gate lay all the answers I had not provided, all the answers that needed to be experienced rather than heard. It was here that we parted ways.
