“Once, I dreamt of shapes beyond nature, perfect in their forms. Then I knew no animal, nor human, nor demon could bring them into this world. None but gnoll. And so we construct.”

“Once, I remembered the ones gone. With their little pointy hats, and pointless singing, and their weakness for humans, who seemed to ignore their dark otherworldly origins. So we shall become as the ones gone and fool humans too, so they do not interfere in Chal Mergh’zed, the Highest Goal.”

“Once, I saw a gnoll paint a hunter fighting a beast. And the painted hunter felt real fear, since the painted beast was real to him, not knowing they were both just a painting. And we would not know if we were a painting either. But if the painted hunter ever starts painting too, then we will know there are gods above us.”

“Once, I discovered the purpose of gnollkind. Only in the youngest branches of the World Tree, there can be endless, eternal peace. And only in there both the perfect forms and gods dwell. So we will build up, higher than the boldest of birds, to the worlds beyond. Such is Chal Mergh’zed, the Highest Goal.”

“Once, I observed the small, bare-skinned walkers wandering aimlessly. They looked for meaning under rocks, and in the sky, and on the tips of their spears. And so I knew they were an inferior species, for they did not know Chal Mergh’zed, the Highest Goal.”

“Once, I pondered on when and where I was. And never was I yesterday nor tomorrow. And never was I far away. For every time, I was only here and now. Never any other place and time were real.”

“Once, I learned that only what is built in the mind is eternal. All the constructions of the gnoll were weak to time, all but those of theory and thought. But the rest of the gnollkind did not heed my words, as they were too obsessed with matter. I now know they would never reach Chal Mergh’zed, the Highest Goal.”

“Once, I remained alone. The rest of the gnolls believed they would reach Chal Mergh’zed by work, so they build up. And by invention, so they dreamt of flying. And by war, so they conquered endlessly. And I saw that the highest order can only be reached by taming the greatest chaos. I could hear it humming, whispering my name as it spread across the land. The Roots were Chal Mergh’zed.”

“Once, I noticed the perfect balance in the world around me. Wherever I went, there was as much suffering as there was joy, as much hatred as there was love. So if there are places of endless, unbroken happiness they must exist beyond this world.

Such must be the roots and higher branches of the World Tree.”

“Once, I pondered on worth. What value does a crown jewel have for a starving gnoll? So it shall be such that worth is only in what’s sweet, and warm, and soft, and shiny. And such is honey.”
